Today Nic and I walked the last 7km of the 50km challenge we will be doing in two weeks. I think it is a bit cruel that after walking 43km we will have 7km uphill to go. I am currently thinking it will probably be the easiest of the entire day. Knowing you are near the end and the achievement of walking that distance.
If you would like to sponsor me or donate for the walk here is a link on where you can do it. All money raised goes to Operation Flinders. http://www.everydayhero.com.au/choose_your_own_adventure
The Operation Flinders Foundation is a South Australian based charitable organisation that runs a world leading wilderness adventure program for young offenders and young people at risk. The program takes participants between the age of 14 and 18 years on an eight day exercise in the far northern Flinders Ranges, providing an opportunity for its participants to break away from their past and grow as valued members of the community.

City to Bay 2011
A year ago I did the 6km option of the City to Bay. I had about a week of prep before doing it and was extremely unfit. To do 6km was a big deal and a big achievement, especially with the foot injury I had at the time.
This year I had a years worth of training with my walking/running and more recently going to the gym and having a personal trainer. In the week leading up to the run I didn't do a great deal as I didn't want to go into it with an injury. This year I was 20kg lighter!!!
There were four of us that were doing the 12km as a team. Team Un-Fit! The members were Trent, Grant & Bec. Grant organised t-shirts for us all that said Team Un-Fit, my t-shirt had a red circle with a line through it over the Un though as I was running whilst they all walked.
At the start I met up with my friend Alyssa as she was also running. Alyssa and I took off running and ran for the first 6km. My left foot then went to sleep and I couldn't feel it at all. I let Alyssa run off ahead as I didn't want to hold her back. I also didn't want to run when I couldn't feel my foot as I was concerned that I would roll my ankle. I had to walk for 2, nearly 3km until I had feeling back in my foot. I then ran the rest of the way. I did the run in 1hr 44mins. It is an ok time but I would have much preferred closer to 1hr 30mins. I know I can't help foot problems and I am certainly proud of myself for finishing the 12km.
Trent, Bec and Grant finished the 12km in just over 2hrs. Grant injured his hamstring within the first 3km of the walk (well run at that point) and I admire his determination to keep going and finish the full 12km considering the pain he was in. Next year I hope the 4 of us will be able to run the 12km together.

Run with Nic
This evening I went out for a run with Nic. It has been a while since the two of us have done any running together. It wasn't to be a huge run or anything, just to get out there running for a bit. We went just over 6km in a poor time of 1hr 8mins. During the last part of the walk Nic was on his phone so that stopped us running. I hadn't been running continuously but I always get frustrated with my time when I know I can do better.
The fastest lap was 7.04mins which I was quite happy with. I am hoping I will do that well with some of the kms when I do the City to Bay in a couple of weeks.

Short Run
Well this morning I was in a crappy mood so I thought I would take it out on a run. I decided I would go for speed over distance and thought I would just do a run around the block. As I have done this run a number of times in the past I knew where the km start and finish. I was waiting for my Endomondo to tick over and start the 2nd km so I could start my sprint but it never did. I checked my phone and it had frozen at 900m! I really wasn't happy. I reset Endomondo and tried to sprint the next km but my heart really wasn't it it. I was all out of whack due to not knowing where the km was to end.
During the last bit of the run I had to run past a truck that was cleaning out the sewers. Not good to be catching a wiff of that as I ran passed. I ended up running the km in 6.02min. I really wasn't happy with my time especially as I know I can go faster. Hopefully next time I will do better.

Slacking Off!
Well it seems my mojo wasn't completely back as it has been 4 weeks since my last entry and this is my first run since then. I have still been going to the gym and now have a personal trainer but still that is no excuse to not go running! The rate I am going I will be 100 before I make the distance around Australia!
I was heading to the football with Grant again yesterday, so I decided it was time to go running again. I had to leave home at 7:30am to make sure I was at Grant's place on time for us to get to the football. As soon as I started running (in what was apparently 3 degrees) I felt like I was going to do a shit time. I wasn't aiming to beat my time from a month ago but if I matched it I would be happy.
My slowest km was again my 2nd km when I stopped at the shops for a bottle of water again. I really should just leave the house with one, would make it easier and then I wouldn't have a 11:17min km. My quickest km was my 4th km 7:18km. As i continued on my run my left foot started getting pins and needles so I walked for a while until it passed. Due to that I was pretty certain I wouldn't match my time from last time. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Grant's place in a time of 1hr 21mins knocking 3mins off of my time. I certainly didn't expect that. I do like it when I get to surprise and impress myself.
I really should get back running at least once a week again as I have the City to Bay coming up again and this year I am aiming to do the 12km in under 1.5hrs. Fingers crossed I manage to do it.

Mojo Back?
It has been 6 weeks since I have done any running. I don't really have any decent excuse for this but I have been keeping up my fitness by going to the gym. My friend Lisa took me to a few Zumba classes and I loved them! I have now joined the gym so that even if I am not going running I am still keeping fit.
During the past 6 weeks I have also gone back to full time work after being a stay at home mum for the past 5 years. This has taken up time as I reorganise my time in the evenings. I have also lost some of my running mojo and it hasn't been until now that I have really wanted to go running. I am hoping that today's run will help me get back into the swing of things.
Today I ran 8.83km. That's right, after 6 weeks of no running I choose a small run to start back with. I was going to the football with my friend Grant so decided to run to his place before we went out. I set myself the goal of 1.5hrs to get there. Trent said it would take closer to 2hrs due to me not running lately.
The route that I ran was not flat it was all up and down hill so that adds a degree of difficulty to it already. My slowest km was 11:52mins but I did stop at the shops to buy a bottle of water during that km. My quickest was my 3rd km and that was 7:29mins. This surprised me as I didn't expect any laps to break 8 mins.
I ended up doing the distance in 1hr 24mins, very proud of myself! Lets see if I now have my proper running mojo back. Fingers crossed I do!

Obstacles
I went for a quick run around the block tonight as I haven't been out since the hike a week ago. My legs were hurting for a few days after the hike so didn't do any running. Felt like I needed to get out and do something tonight so went for the run.
I am used to having obstacles on my runs. Bins on bin night, bikes from kids leaving them out, branches that have fallen from trees. Tonight's obstacle takes the cake though. During the km I was trying to reach my PB (or beat it) I was running in probably the darkest part (due to shadow) and kicked a dead cat. Well I think it was a cat, it could have been a possum, I didn't stop to look. I screamed like a bitch, it scared the crap out of me. Might be changing my route for a while. I only managed 6.7min but considering the cat incident I didn't think it was too bad.

Hiking
Yesterday Nic and I redid the 'Lost' hike. We made sure we had the directions and map this time. We headed off on the right track and within a couple of minutes my calves were very sore. I think wearing high heels (I think they are about 10cm)the two days prior was not the wisest move. The shoes look good and are extremely comfortable to wear but until I went hiking yesterday I didn't realise how much they give the calves a work out.
I did wonder if I was going to be able to do the full hike due to my legs hurting but I also knew if I kept going I would eventually push through the pain and all would be fine. We were walking for an hour before we consulted the map and it was then that we realised that we had walked up the wrong path. We were wear we were supposed to be, but didn't go the right way to get there. The written directions are not the best (the people organising this 50km hike really need to do a better job) so it isn't always easy to work out where to go.
We kept walking and came to an intersection and and from looking at the hills and knowing where we were going and the directions I chose one direction. Nic chose the other as his map showed us going off track. We went Nic's way, which ended up being wrong so we had to double back again. Thankfully we didn't go to far. Once we were on the right track we made it to the top of the hill and stopped for lunch.
After lunch we walked to where there will be a hydration point on the day of the actual hike. This is where we had Robyn pick us up from last time. I managed to walk down hill a lot quicker this time but I still can't run down, just too worried that I will end up rolling down the hill. I don't imagine that would be fun.
After the hydration point we kept going. The path at this point goes along a road. I did not feel entirely comfortable about this as the road has some blind corners and I don't particularly want to get hit by a car. I do wonder how they will work this when the actual hike is on. The directions told us it would be a steep incline and it wasn't wrong. My legs were still a little sore (I have realised when walking up hill I walk on my toes, a lot) but I slowly plodded up the hill taking minimal stops and managed to get up the step hill without too much problem.
We eventually came to a crossroad where we had a discussion over which way to go me going by the written directions and Nic going by the map. I am glad that on the actual day of the hike there will be people to follow as Nic doesn't seem to have the best sense of direction. I think I ended up making Nic go my way but he wasn't convinced it was right. Later on I then made us walk on a narrow track that went around the hill. According to the written directions this was right but again according to the map on Nic's phone we were off track again. I stand by the fact I knew where I was going and that the map on Nic's phone is wrong. The fact that we ended up where we were supposed to says this as well. :-)
The hike ended up taking us 6 hrs (that includes our lunch break), 14.47km and up an elevation of 408m. I was completely knackered at the end of the walk and fell asleep almost as soon as I sat down to eat dinner.
It was a great hike and I look forward to doing the next leg (will remind myself not to wear high heels in the lead up to the hike though).

Park Run
I went out for a run tonight with Nic. We met at one of the local parks to run laps. We hadn't been to this track for a while and as it is well lit it was a good choice for at night as the streets aren't always well lit (unless you run the main roads). The track is just a loop like running round an oval but has some slight hills on it.
I decided I would walk up the hill and then run from the top around to the bottom and walk up again. This way I knew I would get more running in, if I had run up the hill it would have taken more out of me and tired me out quicker. I don't think Nic overly enjoyed this kind of running but at the same time I don't think he was entirely thrilled about being out running in the cold either.
It wasn't a heaps fast run or anything but I was happy with what I did.

Fatty, Fat, Fat
I haven't been out running or walking since Tuesday last week and was sitting on the couch tonight feeling like a right fatty fat fat so decided to go for a run. it was 10pm so a lot later than I would normally go out and 11 degrees. As it had been raining today it felt cooler than last week so this time I wore a jumper. I don't know why I bother. I get quite hot quite quickly and running makes me hot and wearing the jumper just makes me even hotter. I hate feeling that hot and it affects my running.
My iron levels have been quite low this past week as well. I get so physically tired doing nothing and running makes me even more tired yet I still tried to beat my PB. The problem with a PB is to beat it is a lot of hard work and often it is disheartening when you have tried and don't make it. I didn't make it, I did manage 6.11min though. It is a good time but not what I wanted. I am often too hard on myself with my runs but it makes me try harder so I guess it is a good thing too.
It was a crap time all up for the distance but I am glad I got up off the couch and went out.

Shopping Run
I was in a crappy mood this evening and thought a run would fix it. As we needed to do food shopping I decided to run to the shops and have Trent meet me there with the kids. It was a cool night (10 degrees) but didn't feel that cold, to me anyway.
I walked the first 2km and then decided I would jog the rest of the way to the shops. I didn't go overly fast just thought I would try and keep a consistent pace. I kept my speed to around 9mins a km for the 3 km that I jogged. I would be happier if I could go faster but this is good for now. I do find that it does depend on what music I am actually listening to when I am running as it changes my speeds. Slow songs slow me down where as faster songs speed me up. Maybe I should see how long I can keep up the running when it is all faster songs I am listening to?
I ended up beating Trent and the kids to the shops and started the shopping before they got there. I thought the shops would have been slightly further (about 6/7km) than what they were (5.88km) but it was good to get out. It didn't fix my mood but I got a run out of it so I am happy(ish).

Lost!
Today Nic and I went out to do some more training for our 50 km walk. We did the first leg the other week (20km) and today we were going to do the next leg (16km).
I dropped my car at the finishing point for that leg and then Robyn dropped Nic and I at the start and we headed off. Now, prior to today I knew that Nic had printed off the map and directions for todays walk so didn't bother to do it myself. Wrong decision! Nic forgot the maps and so we only had the map on my phone to go by. It wasn't overly clear so we spent the first 30 mins going teh wrong direction and walking in circles and into dead ends.
We went back to the start and worked out where we should be going and headed off again. Nic called Robyn and asked her to take a photo of the maps and send them to our phones as then it would make it easier for us to know if we were going the right direction or not. We continued on the path following the signs to Black Hill Summit as we knew that is where we needed to head towards. Oh my goodness, the size of the hill we had to walk up was huge. Now I thought my fitness was getting a lot better but now I am not entirely convinced that it is. My lungs seriously felt like they were going to explode, they were burning. I don't know if it was to do with the weather, the hill or my fitness but it made me feel really unfit! We stopped part way on the hill and had lunch. Whilst we were sitting there we received a photo from Robyn of the map and directions. Turns out we were still going the wrong way! The path we were on would eventually reach where we needed to go so we chose to continue the way were going rather than turning around again.
The scenery on the walk was beautiful, there were just some atrociously large hills. Once we met up with the path we were supposed to be on we decided we would only walk to where there would be a hydration point and ask Robyn to pick us up from there as we both had things to go tonight. We had taken a while to get to where we were and knowing that we still had a fair bit to go thought it was best to stop.
I am hoping that the path we have to actually take isn't as steep as some of the hills we took today but I guess Nic and I will have to try this leg again and get the right one next time. We may have been lost but it was fun and we did end up walking 10km. It was hard and quite high and totally worth it. Over that 10 km we walked an elevation of 350m so a decent hike up the hills.

6am!
6am! The alarm goes off. Then begins the internal fight of sleep vs exercise. Turn the alarm off and get up or hit snooze and get 10 mins more sleep? Do I get up or do I message Nic to say not today? It is still dark outside and it is a little chilly (for me anyway). What is there to entice me out of my bed to do running other than feeling good for doing it? Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no. After the 15 minute argument with myself and a text from Nic to say he was awake, exercise won!
I got to Nic's place at 6:30 and we went for a run. I felt tired but not from lack of sleep, just the, this is early morning and I have just woken up tired. I took a while to get going with the running, which surprised me a little. Also my legs were really tight. I tried to do a PB but didn't manage it. I realise I can't do a pb every time I go running but it is still a small let down when I don't beat it (or get close to it). Sometimes I wonder what it is that helps me go faster. Is it the music I listen to? Is it the fact I am running on my own? It is an interesting thing.
I am glad I went out this morning it makes me feel good and is a great way to start the day. Will be easier to get up when it isn't so cold and dark. Just have to wait for winter to be over.

Night Running
I went out on a route I have run before but this time went the opposite direction. I don't know if it makes any difference (probably unlikely). I walked my first km to warm up and ran my second which was mainly uphill and it ended up being my fastest km of my run at 7:03min.
I didn't do 6km like I had planned to, as part of the route has no lights and didn't feel that would be overly safe in the dark. Not because of creepy people that may be lurking in the bushes (again unlikely) but because it is more likely I will injure myself if I can't see where I am running. The last thing I want is an injury when I am enjoying myself so much.

Getting Fitter & Faster
I truly do amaze myself at times. I decided today that I would go for a run tonight. I got Trent to drop me off at my friends house and I was then going to run home. I have run this route before it is the one with the giant hill. I thought I would see if I could run all the way up the hill. It was more a very slow jog but I did it and I took about 2 mins of the km tat includes the hill.
The last time I did this particular route I took 50 mins but today I took 7mins off that time and did it in 43mins. I couldn't believe it. It just goes to show that I am not only getting faster but obviously fitter as well. Pretty chuffed!

Practice Hike
This morning Nic and I met up to practice the first leg of the 50km walk we are planning on doing in October. The first leg of the walk is 18km so that was our goal. We both had our hydro backpacks, backpacks that carry a bladder of water with a hose/straw for you to drink from whilst walking. The water makes the bag quite heavy but we needed to fill the bags for the walk so we could see how we would go carrying the weight over that distance.
We had the map of the leg, which to be honest was pretty useless. I am glad that it came with a written description of directions because without that I am not sure we would have followed the right path at times with out them.
When we reached about 14km both of us started getting slightly sore lower backs/hips. Not painful enough to not be able to keep going but a noticeable ache. It is a long walk so not entirely unexpected. To be honest I am actually a little surprised I wasn't more sore during the walk, let alone afterwards.
When we got to where I had parked my car we had walked 19.41km in 3hr 55min. I really enjoyed the walk. The random conversations about nothing with Nic to pass the time. It was a nice walk that I would happily do again. We will have to plan the next leg for in the near future, however the next leg is more bush walking so I will need to buy proper hiking boots for that leg.
If how I feel after walking just under 20km is anything to go by I think 50km is completely doable. It will be long and hard and I am sure at times challenging but I know that both Nic and myself are very capable of walking the 50km.

Running in the Cold
I love it! I love the cold. I love the smell of wood fires burning. It also seems that cold weather makes me run faster. I knocked 4 seconds off my PB tonight so it is now 5:53min for a km. I still surprise myself with what I am capable of doing and how much I am willing to push myself and how much I am still enjoying going out running and that I want to go running over walking.
I only went out for a quick run tonight as Trent had to go out and I only had about 30mins to get a run in. 2.72km is better than nothing and as I said I got a PB so it could have been because I had to hurry as well. Either way, I am impressed with myself.

Sore Hips
I haven't been out since Monday evening. Thursday & Friday mornings Nic and I had all intentions of meeting up and going running before he goes to work. Both mornings we cancelled at 6:30 due to lack of sleep the night before and because of how cold it was. Hopefully my sleep will get better and morning runs will start happening otherwise the runs will be few and far between.
We did end up going out for a run last night. The plan was to see how far I could run non stop. I have done 4km before so at a minimum that was the goal. Unfortunately not even that happened. I had spent all day doing housework and had a sore back which also made my legs very sore and tight. This meant only just over a km of continuous running. I didn't think housework would affect my running so much. We did still go 6.34km though, which I am very happy about.
I can not believe how sore my hips were afterwards though, I was walking like an old Nanna. I think housework causes more trouble than it is worth.

Back to it!
Well after 11 days off of running I have been feeling quite lazy about not doing anything. I know I have done some things that have been exercise of sorts but still it wasn't running or riding, so I haven't felt overly fit.
I decided tonight to get back into the running. I chose not to go far so that I would ease myself back into it all. I didn't expect to do much running, thought I would do more walking. After the first km I decided to run the next km just to see how I would go. Well didn't I get a massive surprise when at the end of that km the woman on Endomondo told me I ran it in 5min 57sec!!! I didn't think I had been running that fast. I am pretty impressed that I have now broken the 6min mark for a km.
Hopefully I will continue to get faster. My aim is 5mins by September for the City to Bay, which before now I would have thought to be completely impossible. Fingers crossed I can make it.

Early Morning Run
This morning I got up at 6am to go for a run with Nic. Since daylight saving stops us from running at night, I suggested that we go for a run before he starts work. Hence the 6am wake up.
I arrived at Nic's place at 6:30am. We ran along the local creek near Nic's house. I really enjoyed the run. We started off slow but that is expected as we had to wake up and and warm up. The first km we ran we did in 7:19mins, which I didn't think was too bad for that time of the day.
During the next km Nic suggested we try for a fast km next. I was fine with it not expecting to go overly fast. As we were running along Nic was being a pain the arse telling me to run faster or I wasn't going to make a good time. My legs were so tired, I couldn't go faster. When I thought I was almost at the end I managed to find a bit more energy but when we passed where I thought the end of the km was I started to slow down. Nic was on at me the whole time. We reached the end of the km and I heard the GPS woman tell us we had just run that km in 6:15mins!!! WTF! I thought I was running slow. I am pretty certain that Nic was trying to get me to beat 6mins and I think that if he hounds me on our runs like he did today it will happen.
I do like being pushed and I seem to run better when under pressure. I am looking forward to my next run and will definitely do another early morning run as it is a great way to wake up for the day.

Questionable Run
Earlier this evening I went for a quick run around the block. Trent was home a bit later from work than expected so it was dark when I went out. I still also had to go food shopping so couldn't go out for too long. The quick run around the block seemed the best option.
The first time it ticked over to a km I thought it went too quickly. I ignored it and kept going. I ran the 2nd km and it it told me I ran in 4min 44sec. Now there is no way in hell that I ran that fast so I knew something weird was going on. I kept going and didn't check it until I got home. The GPS on Endomondo had gone completely haywire. I was apparently running through houses and also suddenly became a super runner. I worked out by the time it took me to run that there was a possibility that I had run a km in 6 1/2mins but I still think even that is questionable. I think it is extremely unlikely I even beat 7mins in tonights run.
It was a short run but I am glad I went out.

Bike Ride
Last night Nic and I rode home from town. It had been 10 days since I had gone out and done any exercise with Nic. I have missed his company too. I often think I prefer to go out on my own and do my own thing in my own time but when I ran my fastest km the other day I missed having Nic there, just to have someone say well done at the time. Our random conversations whilst walking/running are quite good for making time go quicker on longer runs. I have to start making sure I organise times when Nic can join me again.
Anyway, yesterday. I was well tired before we even started riding as I got up at 6am to do some photography work for my brothers work. After I finished I went and met Trent in town to wait for Nic to finish work. Trent fixed my puncture the night before so I was actually able to ride my bike.
We left town a bit later than planned as Nic finished work late. We rode along the bus track. We hadn't gone far (about 2km) when we had to stop because Nic's chain came off his bike. It was quickly fixed and then we headed off again. It wasn't too dark until we were near the first bus interchange out of the city. Neither Nic or I have lights on our bikes, I have reflectors but they are no good in the dark. Nic and I were heading down a hill and then slightly up hill. Nic was in front of me and all I saw was Nic hit something. How he didn't fall off the bike I have no idea. It was the funniest thing I have seen in ages though.
The rest of the ride went fairly uneventful. The gears on my bike stuffed up a bit and would jump out of gear as I went up hills which made it a bit difficult to ride up hills. I ended up having to walk up hills because of it. Annoying but hopefully it will be fixed before my next ride.
I am impressed that after 13yrs of not riding and then only 3 rides I rode 20km in 2hrs. I think we would have ridden quicker had we been riding during light or had lights on the bikes. Something to think of next time.

Short & Fast
I was totally not in the mood to go running tonight but knew I had to because it had been three days since I went out. I was supposed to go out Saturday morning but I slept in and then Trent went out so I couldn't. A make up run on Sunday wasn't really an option as it was Shayla's birthday party. I am so tired and exhausted from the weekend that running really was on top of my list of today's priorities.
When I went out it was getting quite dark and was cold so I decided to only run the smaller block around our place. Lazy I know but like I said I wasn't in the mood either. I walked the first km and felt like I was going really slow so I ran the second km. Holy crap on a cracker I beat my best time! 6min 52sec! I really do surprise myself sometimes. I really felt like I was going slower than normal, guess I was wrong!
I know Nic is going to push me more now that he knows I can break the 7min barrier!

Lone Hill Climb
This morning I decided to climb the hill Nic and I climbed last month. It was quite nice this morning, so I went with my music & my water and headed up the hill. It was a lovely morning for walking up the hill.
It wasn't as horrendous as I remembered it being. I think not having a hangover helped a lot. I did have a nice break at the top of the hill taking in the scenery. I didn't do any running today just a nice walk to keep up with my alternate day walking.
I might try a new route next time I go up there though.

City Loop
This evening I took the kids straight from school to a playground in town. I did their homework with them before Trent, Nic, Robyn & Charlie arrived. While Nic and I were to run a loop through some of the city streets Trent & Robyn were going to stay with the kids as they played in the playground.
It was a decent loop we did as well, 5km. Not much running as I had a massive headache and my shins are hurting and I am a bit concerned about getting shin splints again, not something I want to experience again. We did run a km in 7.15min though.
I did enjoy our run as I did feel much better at the end of the run than I did at the start. By the time our 5km was finished my headache was only a quarter of the size it was when we started the run.

Run & BBQ
Late this afternoon Trent, the kids & I met Nic, Robyn & Charlie at a playground along the bus track. This is a playground that Nic and I had passed on one of our previous bus track runs. It is an enclosed playground (great when there are four kids that have to be watched) and has a BBQ. We thought we could go for a run whilst the kids play and Trent & Robyn organise a BBQ for when we get back.
It wasn't a huge run. I still have sore legs (and butt) from yesterdays bike ride. I did manage a 'fast' km of 7.15min. Not bad with tired legs. When we got back the BBQ was ready and delicious (thanks Trent and Robyn). Unfortunately the playground doesn't have any lights and now because of day light saving ending it gets dark early,s o we did end up eating in the dark. It was delicious though so totally worth it.

I went out for a ride again this evening. I borrowed Nic's bike again as the puncture on my bike is still not fixed (will get round to it soon I am sure). It has been three days since my last ride and my butt still hurts from last time. This bike has got the worst seat ever. It may as well have a plank of wood as the seat it is that hard and uncomfortable.
Today I rode just over 6km. A lot of hills, which make it very tiring but worth it (except for the uncomfortable seat. I really must get the puncture fixed on my bike so I don't have to use Nic's bike anymore. (I do appeciate the loan Nic just not the sore butt).

Fartleking
What is fartleking?
Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish, is a form of interval training which puts stress on the whole aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the exercise. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies, meaning that aerobic and anaerobic systems can be put under stress. It differs from traditional interval training in that it is unstructured; intensity and/or speed can be varied whenever the athlete wishes. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise.
(taken from Wikipedia)
Tonight I tried some of this fartlek training. Walk a km, run a km. I know fartleking is usually shorter distances but hey why not try bigger distances? I have worked out though that when I do this the running sections will ALWAYS be up hill!
Tonights run wasn't overly long, 4.32km, but I went out on my own and it was dark so didn't want to be gone too long. Took me 39:06mins. Not too bad I don't think. All but 1 km were under 10mins. Slowest lap was 10:50mins and the fastest was 7:23mins. Not too bad I don't think.
Still deciding whether or not to go out riding tomorrow. Will have to wait and see what the weather is like.

Cycling
Well today after 13 or more years I got back on a bicycle and went for a ride. My bike still has a puncture so I borrowed Nic's bike and went out when Trent came home from work.
I loved it! I loved being back on a bike. I was concerned that I would fall off but it turns out the saying 'you never forget how to ride a bike' is true. I will definitely get the puncture in my tyre fixed so on the days I don't run I can go out riding.
I am still not 100% convinced that a bike helmet will prevent anything happening to my head if I was to have an accident. I may as well put a child's foam booster seat on my head, would do the same thing! I know it is law etc... to wear one but still have no idea how it will protect my head. Maybe I feel this way because of wearing a motorbike helmet which covers your entire head. Fingers crossed I never need to worry about it.

Night Run
Well daylight saving doesn't start until Saturday but it is already getting dark quite early. Looks like we will have to start running earlier or before Nic starts work in the morning.
Tonight Nic rode his bike over before we headed out on our run. I was supposed to go riding on my bike but found out during the day that it has a puncture. I told Nic earlier in the day that I wanted him to push me tonight. I need to get back running more and unless I am pushed I don't think it will happen. We walked a km and then would run a km. The first km we ran was done in 7min so it looks like I will be having to attempt a new pb shortly . Our walking and running did get slower as we went on, not a lot slower but slower. Our runs stayed under 9mins so I am happy with that.
I really enjoyed tonights run and I am already looking forward to Wednesdays run.

Tired legs
Yesterday I walked to Mum and Dad's house. I had planned on running and I did try to do some but my calves were so tight and sore that it hurt, so I just walked as fast as my legs would let me. My legs were so sore that it took over an hour to walk there, my slowest time getting to their place yet.
I know that any walk is better than no walk but it still irritates me when I take longer than normal. I know my legs hurt and that 6km is better than nothing but still I feel like I need to lift my game a bit.

Solo Run
I went for a run on my own today to Nic & Robyn's house. It has been a while since I have done this particular run.
The start of the run was a bit interesting, walking past a road blocked of by police and star force officers. Turns out they were trying to capture a knife wielding maniac that had escaped police custody (they did end up catching him but not as I walked passed).
I did the run in 55:26mins. My fastest km was 8:12mins, not my fastest lap ever but still a decent time. I have dead legs now and feel like I am about to pass out. It was a good run.

Running in the Dark
Started tonight's run later than usual due to an appointment I had. This meant that half of the run was done in the dark. It doesn't really bother me but when it is hilly and dark it does make me a little nervous about my ankle. Turns out it was Nic who needed to be careful, mind you he didn't stack it like I did.
I did the hill run that I did a few weeks ago (the one when I rolled my ankle). I have been so tired the past few days that I wasn't sure how I would go speed wise. I walked the 1st km in 11.22 mins (not a great speed) but I did the 2nd km, which also had the hill in it in 11.44 mins. I guess that this shows that my running is getting better and it would have been under 11 mins if I had run the whole km. The rest of the walk was slower but with it being dark I wasn't really going to push myself too hard.
It is supposed to rain the next few days so I will have to make a decision of where to go on Thursday based on the weather, but I will probably just go to the oval again as it is close to home.

Bug Filled Run
Yesterday I went with the family to meet our new niece/cousin in the country. As I am trying to stick to my current routine of running every day I took my running gear with me. I decided to go for a run in the late afternoon.
I was going to run to the next farm but as I was running the were so many flies, dragonflies and grasshoppers I decided to stop halfway and turn around. I ran a total of 4km in about 30 mins. I am not entirely sure about the time as it was based on the wall clock when I left and then when I returned. It was so hot and muggy. So sweaty. It is weird I would generally hate being sweaty but I now actually like the feeling of being sweaty after my runs. Even though I was constantly being attacked by bugs and that the road was all rocky and gnarly I really enjoyed yesterdays run.

Return to the Oval
I had a crappy day at home with the kids today. Once Trent got home from work I decided to go out for a run in the hopes of feeling better. I only ran 3.56km, which I know is better than nothing but made me feel rubbish for not running very far. I wasn't really in the mood for running but knew I had to go out to continue with my current routine of running every other day. When I stopped running I just lay on the oval for about 20mins just watching the clouds. I have to say I felt better after just sitting there doing nothing than I did from the run but I am still glad I went out.

Awesome Run
Went for a run in town today with Nic. We ran the same track that the Santa Fun Run was on. Now apparently I ran the fun run in 31mins. After today I am not entirely sure I did. I didn't have my phone with me on the fun run, so I am pretty certain we just guessed how long it took us. Today I ran a lot more of the track and I definitely ran quicker but it took 40mins, so I think we guessed wrong on the fun run.
Part way through the 2nd km Nic decided it was time for me to try and beat my PB of 7:15min for a km. I was up for the challenge and was pretty certain I could do it. At the end of the km I had run it in 7:19min, SO ANNOYED! As I started walking again I decided that I was determined to beat my PB. I knew I could beat it and was going to make myself do it!
I think Nic was a little surprised that I was willing to try and beat it so soon after running. I started the km a little too quickly and became too puffed to keep running. Nic wouldn't let me slow to a normal walk and set the pace for me to keep at to beat my PB. I power walked to keep up with Nic. He then made me start running once I was getting to slow. Nic would let me know how far I had left to go and pushed me to keep me going. I made the final km in 7min! A new PB! I was pretty chuffed with myself but I also realise with out Nic pushing me I wouldn't have done it.
I absolutely loved running like this. Nic pushing me to make me work harder. I much prefer to run in this way and I know that by putting this confession on here that Nic will push me more often but in my opinion that can only be a good thing and I look forward to it.

Hill Climb
I do not know how I managed to get myself out bed and do todays walk. I had a massive night out with my sister and didn't get home until 5:30am. I had already planned on a walk with Nic today and a hill walk at that. It took us almost 2hrs to walk 6.54km.
It was great to reach the top of the hill and see the amazing view of the city etc.... Also the fact that it pretty much meant only downhill from there. As it turned out that was wrong but it was worth it. I felt so much better after the walk (a lot more awake). I do think my calves will be hurting in the morning though from climbing this hill.
It was a great walk, will have to do it again when I am more rested and feeling 100%.

Another Bus Run
Yesterday afternoon I met Nic at the final interchange along the bus track to run into town. This would then mean we have run the full length of the bus track.
It was quite a warm afternoon and quite a hilly section of track. I have been slacking with my running and these conditions didn't help. I have been struggling to run just 1km when I know I have run 4 in the past. I don't know if I am just going through a sluggish period or the couple of 4km runs I did have just been flukes. I tried another 1km run but stopped running just short of a km. It annoys me.
Hopefully something will change soon and I will start running a bit more.

Beach Run
Last night I went for a beach run with Nic. We probably didn't go out at the right time as it was high tide so we had to venture up off the each onto the path at time to be able to keep going. We did continue in the water at places but the water was almost knee high so makes it a bit difficult.
Nic and I have talked for some time about doing a beach run, so it was good to finally do it. My legs don't feel as bad as I thought they would. A little tight but more fatigued than sore. I would definitely head out and do a beach run again.

Ankle Test
I decided to test my ankle today to make sure it would be OK to do a decent run in a few days time. I had to go to the shops so I walked home from the shops whilst Trent bought the kids and shopping home.
I ran the first 1km but with traffic lights along the way it didn't help my time as I had to keep stopping and starting. When I started to go up hill it made my ankle feel a little tight but not unbearable. I then started to keep an eye out for Trent as I had a feeling he would b passing shortly. I ended up about 500m from home when he passed me. Looking out for Trent slowed me a little but at the same time it would have been good for my ankle to be slightly slower.
3.65km not bad as an ankle test.

Wonky Footpaths
Went to go for a hill run with Nic last night. We didn't even get 1km before Nic pushed me and made me stack it! Nah, he didn't really push me. The footpath and the grass next to it weren't even and I rolled my ankle and skinned my knee. We ended up just walking as my ankle hurt a bit too much to walk but not enough to go home.
When we got to the bottom of the hill Nic ran ahead while I turned around and walked back up the hill. I waited for about 10 mins for Nic once I was at the top of the hill. There is no way I could have run today.
Considering the way the walk started finishing with 6.27km is quite good.

A Run With My Man
Today I went for a run with Trent. We had my Mum and Dad watch the kids and went out from their place. They have a creek near their house and we just followed that. I had hoped to go 6km but my leg started to give me some grief, so I started walking for a bit, tried to restart the running but it hurt too much. I am hoping this is not the return of shin splits! I think I am going to have to rest my leg for a few days to make sure it is all ok and doesn't become to injured.
I enjoyed going out for a run with Trent as it is a rare thing we get to do (what with needing the kids watched etc... Maybe I will start trying to get Mum and Dad to watch the kids a little more so we can go out together maybe every few weeks.
I am not sure Trent enjoys it as much as me but it is nice to have company and I do enjoy his company.

Bus Run
Today Nic decided we would do a run along another section of the bus track. To get from one bus station to the next wasn't as far as we thought it would be, it was only 3km. We swapped sides of the track to come back again and it was 5km to get back! It doesn't really go alongside the bus track on the way back, so we had no idea how far we had to go and at times felt like we were quite lost.
I tried to beat my last PB but I went out to hard to early and then ran up a hill (I thought I was closer to the end of the km than I was). I stopped running thinking I wasn't going to beat it, my legs were tired, my lungs hurt and I was super hot. I ran the km in 7:38min only 18secs slower than my PB. If I had kept running I would have beaten it, I am so annoyed at myself. In future I will listen to Nic more as he said I would beat it but I didn't think I would. Sometimes I think I need to believe in myself a little more than I do.
I am so knackered right now I am about to pass out, brilliant run tonight!

Alternate Creek Walk
Today I had planned on walking the creek walk we did a week ago but going to the end of it just to see where it ends up. Nic was a bit later coming over than I had planned so we did our original creek walk but just walked the other side of the creek to what we did last time.
We didn't do loads of running, well Nic did more than me as he ran laps of the oval whilst I jogged ahead. I am really over laps of the oval at the moment, it is so much easier to keep running when you have a destination rather than a distance to reach.
Nic did make me run up a hill on the way home, I think Nic was trying to make me think I was back at Bootcamp. My legs are a bit tired but they feel good so the hill was worth running up.

Hill Run
Holy Crap on a Cracker! I did a hill run tonight. It is a run I have done before but thought I would see if my time had improved. This hill is ridiculously steep and at times felt like I was just jogging on the spot. It isn't a very long run but the hills make it seem like you have run a marathon.
Last time I did this run I did it in 50mins, tonight I did it in 42min beating my last time by 8mins. I am a little chuffed about this (hadn't expected such a big difference). I guess this shows that I am getting fitter over time.
I have decided to put up some photos of this hill. The first is approaching the hill, the second is taken from the top of the hill.

Personal Best
Nic and I did a run along the local bus track tonight, We ran between two of the stations. During this 6km walk I managed to do two PB's. The first one was how long it took to do the 6km. When I did the 6km City to Bay last year I did that in just over 55min. Tonight I did 6km in just over 53min. Only 2 mins but still it is still an improvement and a PB.
The other was my fastest ever 1km, which I did in 7min 15sec. This I am pretty chuffed about. If I keep running the way I have been I will end up running as fast as Nic by the time the next City to Bay comes around!

Creek Walk
Last night Nic and I went on our longest walk yet. It was quite a hilly walk along a creek near my place. We did some running but not heaps, especially after running up one particular hill that was quite steep. It was quite a pleasant walk as it was away from roads so no car fumes etc...
We had only planned on walking about 6km but wanted to see where we were (the path was at the bottom of a hill). We walked up another massive hill and worked out we were behind the local prison. We then walked through a maze of dead end roads to work our way back home (some lovely houses in this area). We ended up walking 8.21km and now I have a sore butt from walking/running up hills! Totally worth it though.

Circles
Nic and I went out a bit later than we have been as the weather has still been quite hot during the day. We go out that little bit later in the hopes of it being a bit cooler.
We went to the local oval again and it is quite breezy on one side of the oval but the other side is so still it makes you want to get to the breezy side again. I tried to do some running tonight but I just couldn't. I think i am getting sick of running in circles on the oval and need a change of scenery for a while. It may also have been to do with eating dinner only 30mins before going out, not going to do that again. I ended up only walking 4km but it was better than not going out.
I am going to find somewhere new to go next time we go out.

Evening Walk
It has been quite hot over the past few days and it is supposed to get even hotter, so last night I went out after dark with Nic. We ran one lap of our normal oval and then just walked through the streets as it was still quite warm even though it was after 9pm. All the laps I did were quite slow but as I said it was hot. I don't think I will be going out again until the end of the week as it is supposed to be over 40c (104f) for the next few days. I hate this weather!

Holiday Over
I have been away for a week on holidays. It was a lovely holiday but the only walking I did was around the attractions I went to with the family. We arrived home at 3am this morning so I decided to get straight back into the walking. We went to Mum and Dad's for tea so I decided I would walk home. I headed off before Trent and the kids, so that they could stop at various places to make sure I was ok. I went out at 9pm as it was too hot to go out earlier, so because it was dark I thought it would be wise for Trent to meet me at various places along the way. Also I had them have some water in the car for me (I have learnt from my episode of running in the heat).
I started off walking and got bored so started running and ended up running 4km of the 5.5km. I was quite proud of that considering it has been over a week since I have been out. I think I may be becoming a runner after all. I did stop before I got home though as my leg was hurting a little and I want to prevent getting shin splints again, so it worked out well that Trent was waiting for me.

New Scenery
Today Nic and I went running at a different park. It is always nice to have a change of scenery, as it helps to keep motivated. Today I went 6.08km but I actually ran 4km of that. Not an easy feat considering there was a hill that I was running up. The actual track I was following was just a bit less than 500m, so I ran up hill twice every 1km. Yes there was a downhill as well to make up for it but still running up hill is not an easy feat, especially the longer you are running.
Considering I was running up hill I was surprised to see that my fastest km today was 8min 14sec. I was quite impressed with myself. My slowest was a walking lap but I was getting fairly tired by then and that was 10min 32sec. I am getting faster though as the whole 6.08km took 59mins. I might be able to beat my 6km walk from last years City to Bay after all.

Slacking
It has been almost a week since I have been walking. Pretty slack really. I need to get back into going out 3 times a week. I did 6.69km today but only walked, didn't do any running (again pretty slack of me). When I know I can do 1km in 8ish mins and my fastest km today was 11min 39sec it is pretty slack. I need to start lifting my game!

Slowing Down
Tonight I went out running with Nic. First time in a few runs. I did a total distance of 6.71km but only ran 2.5km. The past two runs have taken a fair bit out of me and the fact that my foot went funny last run I thought I should take it a little bit easier. I think it has helped but we will see how I feel tomorrow. I did do my fastest lap in 8mins 29secs so I am starting to get quicker but I still need to make sure I look after myself.

More running
Last night I decided to do more running. I decided I needed to prove to myself that I could run 2.5km again and that last time wasn't just a fluke.
I started the run at .5km again. This way I can't stop til I am at whole km (I would just be.5 less than what it says). I told Trent & messaged Nic to check out live tracking on Endomondo online, just to see how and if it works.
Now, generally with Endomondo it has a computerised woman talk to me each km telling me how far I have gone, how long it has taken me and how long that particular km took. The phone pauses my music, she talks and then the music starts up again. With the online tracking people can type messages to the person they are tracking and whilst listening to my music she would cut in with 'message from Trent you are doing well, keep up the good work' or whatever was typed. It is funny because the pep talks actually worked.
Nic gave me a pep talk by telling me to run a few laps of the oval for him. So I decided that I would attempt an extra km making a total of 3.5km. The last km was hell! I thought I am not going to be able to do this, so I thought I would just try .5 extra better than nothing but then realised I would have to watch my phone as I ran. That was just making it worse as the distance seemed to be passing so slow. I put my phone away and just kept going. During the last km my foot started getting pins and needles, to the point I could no longer feel my foot. It was like it was just a dead weight hanging from my leg, not and enjoyable thing to run with. It was very awkward and I was worried I was going to roll my ankle. Didn't stop me running though. I also managed to do a full km and finished running 3.5km! I just laid on the oval for a minute or so to catch my breath and straight away my foot started coming good again. I think I should probably get that checked as I am sure that is not a normal thing to happen.
Since I have done the past to runs on my own I think I may have to make some rules for when Nic comes out running again. No talking whilst running and go at my own pace, don't try and keep up with Nic as he runs faster than me. I also have to make sure it is cool weather, as the heat makes it harder to keep going.

Run, Run, Run
I am so impressed with myself right now. This evening I decided I was going to run and run I did. 2.5km to be precise. I walked .5km before I started running as a small warm up. I then ran laps of the oval whilst listening to my music. I zoned out and just ran. When my phone told me I had reached 3km I was surprised as I never even heard the phone tell me I had reached 2km. Due to starting the run at .5km meant at 3km I had run 2.5km. I am pretty chuffed with myself.
My fastest 1km today was 8.19min and my slowest was 9.34min. Both of those times are quite good (for me anyway). The only problem now is, now that Nic knows that I can run that far he will expect it more often. Legs feel tight right now but it is part of the good pain that I enjoy.

First Walk for 2011
Yesterday Nic & I went for our first walk/run for the year. We went out before lunch so we could all (Nic, Robyn, Trent, I and the kids) have lunch afterwards. We did laps at the local oval. Nic told me I had to run 2km I did my very best and managed 1.5km without stopping. Pretty impressed with myself, slowly getting further with running (aim will be 6km by September for the City to Bay).
Fastest km was 8.05min my fastest km yet. Slowest was 12.41min, not my slwest ever but still fairly slow. We ended up doing 7.04km which was quite good, ran the last lap my legs were stuffed. In a good way though. They are still sore this morning mainly my thighs but I still say it is good pain. I am annoyed about the sunburn I got though, on my thighs and my calves hurts a bit but I have to make sure I put more suncream on next time.
