This morning Nic and I met up to practice the first leg of the 50km walk we are planning on doing in October. The first leg of the walk is 18km so that was our goal. We both had our hydro backpacks, backpacks that carry a bladder of water with a hose/straw for you to drink from whilst walking. The water makes the bag quite heavy but we needed to fill the bags for the walk so we could see how we would go carrying the weight over that distance.
We had the map of the leg, which to be honest was pretty useless. I am glad that it came with a written description of directions because without that I am not sure we would have followed the right path at times with out them.
When we reached about 14km both of us started getting slightly sore lower backs/hips. Not painful enough to not be able to keep going but a noticeable ache. It is a long walk so not entirely unexpected. To be honest I am actually a little surprised I wasn't more sore during the walk, let alone afterwards.
When we got to where I had parked my car we had walked 19.41km in 3hr 55min. I really enjoyed the walk. The random conversations about nothing with Nic to pass the time. It was a nice walk that I would happily do again. We will have to plan the next leg for in the near future, however the next leg is more bush walking so I will need to buy proper hiking boots for that leg.
If how I feel after walking just under 20km is anything to go by I think 50km is completely doable. It will be long and hard and I am sure at times challenging but I know that both Nic and myself are very capable of walking the 50km.
Taken towards the end of the walk
Distance travelled today: 19.41km
Distance travelled so far: 443.49km
Distance left to travel: 25,314.26km
