Today Nic and I went out to do some more training for our 50 km walk. We did the first leg the other week (20km) and today we were going to do the next leg (16km).
I dropped my car at the finishing point for that leg and then Robyn dropped Nic and I at the start and we headed off. Now, prior to today I knew that Nic had printed off the map and directions for todays walk so didn't bother to do it myself. Wrong decision! Nic forgot the maps and so we only had the map on my phone to go by. It wasn't overly clear so we spent the first 30 mins going teh wrong direction and walking in circles and into dead ends.
We went back to the start and worked out where we should be going and headed off again. Nic called Robyn and asked her to take a photo of the maps and send them to our phones as then it would make it easier for us to know if we were going the right direction or not. We continued on the path following the signs to Black Hill Summit as we knew that is where we needed to head towards. Oh my goodness, the size of the hill we had to walk up was huge. Now I thought my fitness was getting a lot better but now I am not entirely convinced that it is. My lungs seriously felt like they were going to explode, they were burning. I don't know if it was to do with the weather, the hill or my fitness but it made me feel really unfit! We stopped part way on the hill and had lunch. Whilst we were sitting there we received a photo from Robyn of the map and directions. Turns out we were still going the wrong way! The path we were on would eventually reach where we needed to go so we chose to continue the way were going rather than turning around again.
The scenery on the walk was beautiful, there were just some atrociously large hills. Once we met up with the path we were supposed to be on we decided we would only walk to where there would be a hydration point and ask Robyn to pick us up from there as we both had things to go tonight. We had taken a while to get to where we were and knowing that we still had a fair bit to go thought it was best to stop.
I am hoping that the path we have to actually take isn't as steep as some of the hills we took today but I guess Nic and I will have to try this leg again and get the right one next time. We may have been lost but it was fun and we did end up walking 10km. It was hard and quite high and totally worth it. Over that 10 km we walked an elevation of 350m so a decent hike up the hills.
